We all know; digestion begins in the mouth, with the physical breakdown of food into smaller pieces, as well as the chemical breakdown of starch by your saliva. When your food enters the stomach, it is further broken down into liquid by the by a grinding motion in combination with hydrochloric acid and pepsin, an enzyme that aids in protein breakdown.

At this point, food enters the small intestine, composed of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. In the small intestine, aided by the vast nutrient-absorbing surface area of villi and microvilli your body absorbs calcium, iron, sugars, amino acids, fats, fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K), and vitamin B12.

The remainder of the food, which is almost waste at this stage, is passed to the large intestine, which is composed of three main parts: the cecum, colon, and rectum. The functions of colon are to absorb salts and water not absorbed by the small intestine, and then to compact and expel the remaining waste product. If digested matter moves too slowly through the colon, too much water is absorbed causing constipation. If it moves too quickly, not enough water is absorbed causing diarrhea and dehydration.

For any of the foods you eat and vitamin and mineral supplements to fully benefit the human bodies, the intestines must be clean and free of debris (which has accumulated over a period of time). The clean colon will allow the nutrients to absorb through the intestinal walls, helping the bodies to detoxify and rejuvenate at a faster rate.

No matter how best food you take in addition to the vitamin supplements and pills, they will not benefit you if the nutrients are not absorbed through the intestinal walls and the elimination of toxic wastes through regular bowel movements. This is like flushing your hard-earned money right down the toilet. Or this is like un-burnt fuel going waste through the faulty engine.

So, the colon, part of the large intestine, has become a primary focus in modern health research. Some people love to call it as “third lung”. As the waste management system of your body, many feel the activity of the colon has the ability to affect not only your health, but also your mood. When it comes to your mood, it can change your attitude. When it comes to your attitude, it can change your life!

So, this is for sure, you need a healthy colon to keep your bowl movements regular to retain a healthy body. Although, methods for preventative colon health are very effective, which include taking fiber rich diets, increase daily water intake, and sometimes light exercises, but this may not be sufficient in the present world. Most of us can’t afford to avoid the processed foods we eat. Additionally, how health conscious we may be, we knowingly or unknowingly come into contact with certain pollutants and toxins.

These toxins come from air pollution, chemicals and chlorine in the water supply, poor diet, bad fats and food additives, insufficient hydration (not drinking enough water), chemicals found in cosmetics, clothing, household cleansers, perfume, and hair care products and many more which you know better!

Colon toxins can cause polyps or small growths on the inner colon lining. Polyps may turn into colon cancer. Inflammation of the colon (large intestine) is called colitis. It can lead to Crohn’s Disease and colon ulcers. Lack of dietary fiber and toxins can cause diverticulitis and infection of the colon. Symptoms of colitis include diarrhea, chronic illness, rectal bleeding and abdominal pain.

Ultimately we need some method or other for colon cleansing. Some believe fasting helps, some take herbs that help regularize bowel movements and aid in the removal of parasites, others take fiber supplements, still others prefer the quick method of colonics, which many feel has immediate, mood-altering benefits.

Some people even turn to yoga, which has poses that yogis believe will ‘twist’ toxins out of your system and help the body return to its natural state. But we feel oxygen-based colon cleansers are the best way for colon cleansing. They treat the disease, not the symptoms and away from any side effects.
