These days “how to recover data” or “data recovery” has become one of the most important concerns not for professionals but even for common people. In this digital age full of computers, software programs and other electronic devices we rely heavily on different kind of date. Quite frankly, it is really difficult to explain the data, it can be anything i.e. any useful facts, figures and information in any form stored or written.
So, when we talk about data recovery, we generally mean any type of data stored in our computer. Basically data recovery is the process of retrieving data stored on a media that is damaged, such as magnetic disks, hard drive and tapes or any other likely media, when it cannot be accessed normally. As generally seen, data loss can occur either due to physical damage to the storage device or logical damage to the file system. And, that damage prevents it from being mounted by the host operating system. So, in simplest words, there are two main reasons of data loss: physical damage and logical damage, and data recovery may include one or both.
But remember, normally end users cannot repair most physical damage, though up to some extent they can repair logical damage. For example, opening a hard disk in a normal environment can allow dust to settle on the surface, causing further damage to the platters. Although, few logical damages can somehow be recovered but that may also need a great expertise and knowledge of different data recovery techniques! Only experienced people know it is easier said than done to recover all the data.
Most logical damage can be either repaired or worked around using two techniques i.e. consistency checking, involves scanning the logical structure of the disk and other is file system repair. But we should also bear in our mind that data recovery software can never guarantee that no data loss will occur. Perhaps, data recovery is one of the most reputed and highly profitable activities in the modern world but for those who know what they are doing and why.
At one hand, it requires a great amount of knowledge and education to get yourself familiar with different technologies, while at other it is a very time consuming process that further requires a great deal of persistence and hard work. But, after all nothing is impossible provided you are determined and well planned. Remember the age-old proverb “precaution is better than cure” and stick to it.
Fortunately, there are some data recovery procedures that you can try before having to resort to professionals. Sometimes a hard drive can be partitioned in to several drives that appear on the computer, and in some cases a single partition from several partitions can fail on one physical drive. This means that all is most likely not lost, and it will probably be recoverable with a little work. Many people simply give up and purchase a new drive, loosing all data, when they could easily recover the data first.
In the modern high-tech age we depend so much on our stored data. So, when data is so precious we have several tools to recover our data. In this field there are a number of companies with data recovery specialists and software products that can help recover data damaged by a disk crash or computer virus or any other reason.
Undoubtedly it is also a fact that not all data on a damaged media is recoverable, but most of the time we are able to restore a surprisingly high percentage of the data. Damage of storage media is not the only reason of data loss but the ability to recover “deleted” data is a problem when equipment used to store sensitive data is to be discarded. So, no doubt, it is very tricky field, but there are great rewards for those who have specialization in the field
